Sad to see the passing of another music pioneer: The great Rick Hall who has passed away aged 85. While on assignment for J.Crew in 2011 photographing Billy Reid in Florence, Alabama we took a trip to nearby Muscle Shoals and talked our way into Rick’s office for a chat and impromptu photo session.

So sad to hear of the recent passing of one of my jazz heroes George Avakian. If you haven’t heard of him check out his biography on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Avakian He pioneered the LP, sleeve notes, multi tracking and overdubbing…and he produced Miles Ahead and my favorite Gil Evans album “New Bottle Old Wine”. I photographed him in 2010 for New York Magazine and was so excited a couple of weeks later when his name popped up on my caller ID at the office. Unfortunately he was calling to tell me how much he hated the photograph.
